How Umomoku Came to Life

While designing the luxury Mulini Beach in Rovinj, the architectural studio 3LHD developed a distinctive piece of outdoor furniture, conceived specifically for the project’s spatial and atmospheric context. Recognizing its broader potential, 3LHD approached Prostoria with the idea of evolving the initial design into a complete outdoor collection and bringing it into production. It was only through this process—when the architectural concept, developed in close collaboration with Prostoria’s R&D team, grew into a coherent family of furniture—that the collection received its name: Umomoku, preserving its original character while expanding its possibilities across different settings.

From Architectural Idea to Collection

The evolution of Umomoku from a single piece into a diverse and complete collection reflects Prostoria’s approach to working with architects. By fully understanding the intent behind the original design, Prostoria translates ideas into furniture that is functional, refined, and made to last. Today, the Umomoku collection comprises an outdoor sofa, armchair, sun lounger, low table, and bench—a thoughtfully designed system created for relaxed social moments and leisure in the open air.

Design That Invites Pause

Hedonism, in the language of this collection, is subtle. Umomoku is composed of precisely aligned wooden slats, shaped with architectural discipline and softened by generous cushions that bring the comfort of interior lounging outdoors. The balance between structure and softness creates environments that feel calm, grounded, and quietly inviting. Although originally conceived as a collection of outdoor wooden furniture, Umomoku retains a tactile warmth and material honesty that allow certain pieces to transition naturally into interior spaces.

“We imagined Umomoku as a relaxed landscape. It doesn’t dictate how to sit or how to rest; it simply provides a clear, honest structure where comfort becomes the main gesture.”

The proportions are deliberately generous, encouraging relaxed postures and a slower rhythm of use. Adjustable backrests and slatted surfaces for books or drinks are thoughtfully integrated, ensuring that every functional detail feels natural and intuitive rather than imposed.

Each element of the collection—from the solid wood structure to the removable outdoor cushions—is produced in Prostoria’s factory in Croatia. This in-house approach enables precise development, testing, and continuous refinement, ensuring that comfort, durability, and material integrity remain central at every stage.

Comfort as Experience

Designed for high-end hospitality projects as well as private outdoor spaces, Umomoku is furniture meant to be experienced rather than merely observed. Its design draws on principles of clarity, rhythm, and craftsmanship, while remaining adaptable to a variety of environments—from terraces and poolside settings to quiet garden retreats.

In every configuration, Umomoku invites moments of pause and slow enjoyment, where structure supports comfort and design steps back just enough for the experience to take the lead—under the open sky.
