Some of Europe's most compelling modernist designs never became classics, simply because they never had the opportunity to enter industrial production. The furniture of Vjenceslav Richter (1917–2002) tells precisely this story.
An architect, artist and theorist, Richter was a leading figure of European modernism and a founding member of EXAT 51, the avant-garde collective that championed the synthesis of architecture, art and design. His international career included the Yugoslav Pavilion at Expo 58 in Brussels, the Milan Triennale and exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Richter conceived furniture as an extension of architecture, guided by structural clarity, proportion and a radical economy of form. Yet many of his designs remained prototypes, archival drawings or pieces created for specific architectural projects.
Having acquired the rights to Richter's furniture designs, Prostoria undertook the responsibility of bringing this remarkable heritage into contemporary production, preserving the integrity of his original ideas while adapting them to today's standards of comfort, durability and use.
Developed over two years with Richter+ (Numen/ForUse, Neisako and Grupa) and Prostoria's in-house R&D team, the collection comprises around twenty pieces across five families: VR51, VR52, VR53, VR58 and VR61. Working from archival drawings, photographs and prototypes, the team reconstructed Richter's design logic, combining original concepts with contemporary engineering and manufacturing technologies.
Rather than reproducing historical forms, the project continues Richter's thinking, giving his ideas the opportunity to become furniture for contemporary life.
The collection has already received international recognition. At NeoCon 2026 in Chicago, the VR61 family won the Best of NeoCon Innovation Award, while the Richter Collection received the HiP Award from Interior Design magazine in the Hospitality category.
The Richter Collection represents a significant addition to Prostoria’s extensive portfolio of chairs and tables for hospitality, workplace and public interiors. At Design Post Cologne, Prostoria will also showcase selected pieces from its Piun, Rhomb, Monk and Strain collections.
